As you all know, I like free games. This time, I am in at the beginnings of a skirmish based Warhammer 40k game that (at first glance) is something like a cross between Necromunda and Inquisitor. But once you start getting into it, you can tell there is a whole lot more to it than that.
This is a free game that is still in development here at Death Squads (fair warning, you do have to be a member of the forum to download it). The only alarming feature about it to me so far is that the rulebook is at 220 pages and still expanding, which is in excess of the actual GW games I am familiar with so far.
Playable squads so far are: Craftworld Eldar, Imperial Guard, Imperial Guard Renegades, and Ork Mobs. If you don't see your favorite 40k faction, fear not! They are constantly expanding the most current rules, and are near completion on: Chaos Cultists, Space Marine Scouts, and Kroot Mercenaries. Why are the Kroot Mercenaries everyone's favorite fan faction? I dug them right at first, but there are so many Krootheads out there I changed my mind.
Another neat feature is that each faction seems to have multiple 'sub' factions like different Aspects for the Eldar, or different 'World' troops for the Imperial Guard like Catachans, Cadians, etc.
This game looks very neat, and I am going to be giving it a try over the next few weeks. I'll let you know what I think of it.
And keep in mind, I'll have to fit this around my regularly scheduled defeats at the hands of my daughter, using kenchan's super simple game. In other words, it'll take me a while.
