Retro Lancer, Or, My Favorite Thing About Gears Of War 3

Yeah, I love it. As if the over the top violence of chainsawing a locust in half with the lancer's revving chainsaw bayonet and spattering blood all over the screen wasn't awesome enough, Gears of War 3 introduces to us the Retro Lancer.

Created as the Coalition of Ordered Government's new infantry rifle, the Mk. I Lancer had a pneumatically powered bayonet which would spring in and out of position. After the sinking of Jacinto, when humanity's survivors were making do with whatever was to hand, the 'Retro' Lancers started seeing their way back into frontline service.

Plus, it looks cooler.

Note: This is a guest post by KE554, since Counterfett is currently out of commission with nerve damage. Stay tuned folks.

It's pretty silly how the chainsaw Lancer was created specifically because a conventional bayonet was ineffective against Locust flesh, but now that they've been sitting around rusting for fifteen years they're suddenly just as good as a chainsaw, if not better.

Yup. I think the only logical rationale is that most gears (ie the helmeted regular guys you sometimes see in cutscenes) can't do much with them. It takes Delta squad, who are some of the best (it's why they're left by GoW 3), with a running start to actually accomplish anything.

It's kind of a dumb failing in the backstory. It's a fun gun in game though.
