12 Days Of Killer Robots - Day 7

Hey all, Counterfett here. Hard to believe the old countdown is already more than halfway finished, huh? I think I might do shorter type events for these countdowns from now on, this has not been nearly as burdensome as previous iterations of this feature. So far at least. Today has me back in territory I am more comfortable with than either television or cinema. I refer, of course, to video games!

#6: HK-47

HK-47, from Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2, is a pretty cool droid. He's tough, he doesn't take crap from anyone, and he carries a giant gun. Oh, and he was built by Darth Revan, all around cool dude. I never played KotOR I, so I will just have to take the word of my several friends who played it and told me he was awesome.

I did, however, play KotOR II, and in that, there was an annoying class of enemy characters called HK-50, one of the earliest boss type fights in the game, in fact. They dog you quite persistently, and say smarmy thinly veiled threats like "...to facilitate communications, and terminate hostilities." As though their transparent veneer of civility will hide the fact that they are scumbags. And then you bring HK-47 online, and he says something like: "Recitation: Yes, as I said, I am an assassin droid. It is my primary function to burn holes through meatbags that you wish removed from the galaxy… Master. Oh, how I hate that term."

Oh, and when you tell him about HK-50, he really lights up:  "Mockery: Am I all right? Oh, yes, Master, why, I am fine. Statement: I mean, I have only just been re-activated, only to find that there are sub-standard duplicates of me running all over the galaxy, corroding my good name. But if they are, in fact, hunting you, then I look forward to the opportunity to meet these units—and educate them in proper assassination protocols."

HK-47, we love you just the way you are.
